# Background information:
My name is Jay. I am from United Kingdom, and am currently in Hua Hin, Thailand, a coastal town famous for its beaches and relaxing atmosphere. I enjoy exploring local markets, trying Thai street food, and spending time by the sea. Living here has given me many opportunities to meet people from different backgrounds and learn new things.
I am a motivated and reliable person with a strong interest in personal development. In my free time, I also enjoy reading, travelling, and exploring new places around Thailand.
# The reasons for travelling/moving to Thailand:
I have decided to travel to / move to Thailand because I am very interested in its culture, lifestyle, and way of life. Thailand is well known for its friendly people, beautiful landscapes, and vibrant traditions, which makes it an exciting place to experience. Another reason is the cost of living, which is more affordable compared to many other countries.
I am also interested in trying authentic Thai food, learning the local language, and exploring famous places such as Bangkok and Chiang Mai.
In addition, I see this as a great opportunity for personal growth. Living in a new country will help me become more independent, adaptable, and open-minded.
Overall, I believe moving to Thailand will be a valuable and rewarding experience for my personal life in the future.
# What challenges do you expect to face along the way and how do you expect to overcome them?
I expect there will be several challenges when living in Thailand, especially at the beginning.
One of the main challenges is the language barrier. Although many people speak some English, communication can still be difficult in daily situations. To overcome this, I plan to learn basic Thai phrases and practise speaking as much as possible. I will also use translation apps when needed.
Another challenge is adjusting to a new culture and way of life. Customs, social behaviour, and traditions in Thailand may be different from what I am used to. I will overcome this by being respectful, open-minded, and willing to learn from local people.
The weather could also be a challenge, as Thailand has a hot and humid climate. It may take time for my body to adjust. I will manage this by staying hydrated, dressing appropriately, and adapting my daily routine.
Finally, I may experience homesickness. Being far from family and friends can be difficult. To deal with this, I will stay in regular contact with them and try to build new friendships locally.
Overall, I believe these challenges are part of the experience, and I am confident that with a positive attitude and willingness to adapt, I will be able to overcome them successfully.
# What do you hope to get out of your experience?
From my experience in Thailand, I hope to gain both personal and professional growth.
Firstly, I want to become more independent and confident by living in a new environment. Facing new situations will help me improve my problem-solving skills and adaptability.
I also hope to learn more about Thai culture, traditions, and daily life. Experiencing a different way of living will broaden my perspective and help me become more open-minded.
In addition, I would like to improve my communication skills, especially in English and basic Thai. Being able to interact with people from different backgrounds is very important to me.
Another goal is to build meaningful relationships and make new friends, both with local people and other international travellers.
Overall, I hope this experience will help me grow as a person, gain valuable life experience, and create unforgettable memories that will benefit my future.
Hi, my name is Bernice Hanlon, and I’m from the United States—Maryland, specifically. I grew up in a large family on a farm, which gave me a deep love for nature, animals, and living life to the fullest. Music has always been a constant support system for me through every phase of life—I truly live and breathe it.
I studied psychology in college, where I also became a certified yoga instructor. I’ve always been deeply interested in spirituality and religion; the idea of what exists beyond this physical realm fascinates me. After graduating, I earned my certification as a Holistic Health Coach through IIN. I believe in the power of both traditional and modern approaches to health and wellness, and I regularly work to integrate healthy habits into my life. It’s slowly become part of who I am—kidding… kind of. That said, I strongly believe that life happens in the middle, and balance is key. I enjoy taking care of myself, but I’m also someone who loves to let my hair down and spend quality time with friends.
I decided to move to Thailand because life in America began to feel exhausting and depleting. I wasn’t drawn to the idea of committing to a traditional corporate 9–5 long-term—not because I’m unwilling to work, but because I value my health and happiness too much to sacrifice them for a system that often prioritizes productivity and profit over people. I’ve come to believe that identity is about so much more than a career, and I wanted to step outside of that mindset. Instead, I chose to enrich my life by immersing myself in a new culture and embracing unfamiliar experiences. Thailand stood out to me not only for its beauty and kind people, but also because Buddhism is the spiritual tradition I feel most drawn to.
One of the biggest challenges I anticipate is putting myself out there in a vulnerable way to build new, meaningful relationships. I’ve always been someone who stays out of the spotlight, and it’s easy for me to retreat into solitude—it’s my comfort zone. But that’s also one of the main reasons I chose this journey. I want to grow into a stronger member of a community and learn how to connect with people in new ways. I plan to do this by making a conscious effort to show up as my authentic self—real, raw, and imperfect.
As for expectations, I’m trying not to hold onto any specific outcome. Instead, I hope that my time in Southeast Asia allows me to grow into a deeper, more grounded version of myself. I don’t want this experience to be centered around partying, but rather about truly understanding a different pace of life. I want to become more present, more grateful for the small (but meaningful) moments, and more comfortable with having less. Ultimately, I hope to slow down and make this a deeply intentional and transformative journey.

Hi! My name is Reah, I’m 23 years old and I am from South Africa. I have a bachelor’s degree in Social Science and enjoy working with people, especially in diverse and dynamic environments.
I have decided to move to Thailand to grow both personally and professionally. For me, this is also a venture to gain international teaching experience and to immerse myself in a new cultural setting. I’m excited about the opportunity to explore Thai traditions, meeting new people and develop my skills in a global environment.
I know that there will be a few expected challenges along the way like adapting to a new culture, a new way of life and adjusting to different teaching methods and language barriers. I plan to overcome these challenges by staying open-minded, being patient and actively learning from these experiences and those around me.
From this experience, I hope to grow as an individual, strengthening my teaching abilities and gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Thai culture
Hey! My name is Tariq, I’m 23 and I’m from Massachusetts in the US. I graduated from BU with a Data Science degree in 2024 and I started working from then on. I most recently worked at Amazon and I was doing data annotation for their AGI department. I also do music outside of work as a freelance audio engineer and producer.
I decided to take part in the program because I’ve always wanted to visit Thailand while also being able to live there long term. I wanted to have time to explore and enjoy different parts of the country while also being able to give back with teaching.
I think some challenges for me will be adjusting to the weather because Boston is pretty cold. I also might have some challenges navigating around the country because I know very little Thai. I hope to overcome this by watching more Thai media and getting faimliar with more terms to build a foundation of the language.
For the overall experience, I hope to build a full picture of Thailand to be able to rely to family and friends about all its beauty. I’ve had Thai food on BU campus a lot but I am especially excited to try the food.

An Overview of the Education System in Thailand
Introduction:
Thailand’s education system has undergone significant development and expansion in recent decades. With a strong emphasis on education as a means of social and economic progress, Thailand has made substantial efforts to improve access to education and raise the quality of its educational institutions. This article provides an overview of the education system in Thailand, including its structure, key features, and ongoing reforms.
1. Structure of the Education System:
Thailand’s education system is divided into several levels, including:
a. Early Childhood Education:
– Early childhood education focuses on children aged 3 to 5 years.
– Preschools and kindergartens provide a foundation for children’s cognitive, social, and emotional development.
b. Basic Education:
– Basic education comprises primary education (Grades 1-6) and lower secondary education (Grades 7-9).
– The curriculum emphasizes core subjects such as Thai language, mathematics, science, social studies, and foreign languages.
c. Upper Secondary Education:
– Upper secondary education (Grades 10-12) is divided into general education and vocational education tracks.
– The general education track prepares students for higher education, while the vocational education track focuses on specific technical skills and vocational training.
d. Higher Education:
– Higher education in Thailand includes universities, colleges, and vocational institutions.
– Universities offer bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs, covering a wide range of academic disciplines.
– Vocational institutions provide specialized training programs to develop practical skills for specific industries.
2. Key Features of the Education System:
a. Compulsory Education:
– Basic education is compulsory for all Thai citizens and is provided free of charge in government schools.
– The government has implemented measures to improve access to education, particularly in rural and disadvantaged areas.
b. National Curriculum:
– Thailand follows a centralized national curriculum, which sets educational standards and learning outcomes for different levels.
– The curriculum includes a combination of academic subjects, moral and ethical education, physical education, and extracurricular activities.
c. Standardized Examinations:
– Students in upper secondary education must pass the national standardized examinations, such as the Ordinary National Educational Test (O-NET), to obtain a high school diploma.
– These examinations assess students’ knowledge and skills in core subjects.
d. Bilingual Education:
– English language education has gained importance in recent years, with efforts to promote bilingualism and enhance English proficiency among students.
– English language instruction is integrated into the curriculum, and English proficiency tests, such as TOEFL or IELTS, are often required for admission to higher education institutions.
3. Ongoing Reforms:
Thailand continues to implement reforms to enhance the quality and relevance of its education system. Some key areas of focus include:
a. Curriculum Reform:
– The Thai government is working to update and align the curriculum with international standards, emphasize critical thinking, creativity, and digital literacy.
b. Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET):
– There is an increased emphasis on expanding TVET programs to meet the demand for skilled workers and promote vocational education as a viable career pathway.
c. Teacher Training and Professional Development:
– Efforts are being made to improve teacher training programs, enhance teaching methodologies, and promote ongoing professional development for educators.
d. Promoting STEM Education:
– Thailand is actively promoting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education to develop the skills needed for a knowledge-based economy.
Conclusion:
Thailand’s education system has made significant progress in expanding access to education and improving educational standards. With a focus on compulsory education, a national curriculum, and ongoing reforms, the Thai government aims to provide quality education to its citizens, enhance student outcomes, and meet the demands of a rapidly changing society. By investing in educational reforms, Thailand endeavours to equip its students with the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to the country’s social, economic, and technological development.
Hi everyone, my name is Manelisi.
I am originally from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and I am currently living in Johannesburg, South Africa. I am a qualified Life Sciences and Natural Sciences teacher. I hold a BSc in Genetics and Microbiology from the University of the Free State and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from the University of the Witwatersrand. I have a strong passion for inquiry-based learning.
I have decided to move to Thailand to broaden my professional horizons and immerse myself in a culture that is vastly different from my own. I am particularly interested in understanding how Science and English are taught in Thailand, and I hope to contribute my skills and expertise as a Science teacher within the Thai education system. I also look forward to experiencing Thai culture and using that knowledge in the classroom to make learning more meaningful and engaging for students.
The most immediate challenge I expect to face is the language barrier, as I will be living in a region where English is not the primary language. I also anticipate a period of adjustment to new social norms and a different pace of life. I plan to overcome these challenges by being a proactive learner and engaging with Thai society in an open-minded and respectful way. I have already started preparing by using various resources and practicing basic Thai phrases. I believe that patience and consistency will be key during this learning process. I also intend to build a strong support network with fellow teachers to share experiences and advice.
I hope to grow both personally and professionally through this experience. Professionally, I want to refine my ability to teach diverse groups of students and adapt my teaching practice to be more globally inclusive. Personally, I look forward to exploring Thailand’s rich culture through activities such as hiking and visiting historical landmarks, including royal observatories. I know this opportunity will open doors to further teaching opportunities in Thailand and other parts of the world. This experience will give me a deeper global perspective and inspire students to see themselves as future scientists and active participants in diverse fields and career paths.
HI, my name is Griffin Angelo, I’m 23 from upstate New York and I’ve recently graduated with a degree in mechanical Engineering. I’ve always wanted to travel and live abroad but never felt like i had the means to, until recently when my partner and i discovered Xplore. I think the main Barrier for me will be adapting to city life. I’ve grown up and lived my entire life in a small town so I’ve never been able to experience the ups and downs of living in a city. I hope to meet a lot of people and learn about there amazing cultures while also being able to traveling and see things i never thought possible.
Hello, my name is Jaden. I’m 22 years old, and I’m from the United States. Ever since graduating this past spring, I’ve had an interest in teaching abroad. I wanted to go somewhere and Asia and I’ve always heard great things about Thailand! I’ve solo-traveled internationally in the past, but the hardest part is always leaving home and saying goodbye to family. This is also the biggest time zone difference I’ve experienced, so I’m going to try my best to acclimate. I hope this experience gives me confidence to teach and continue a career in teaching!
Hi, my name is Zayna and I was born and raised in London, England. I am currently about to complete my masters degree and wanted to spend the summer immersing myself in a new culture, whilst also giving back to the community. This is the perfect time for me before I go back to working full-time again. I was introduced to Thai culture through a family friend when I was younger, and am eager to explore the country for myself. I have previously worked at a school and am keen to continue honing my teaching skills. I have never been away from home for such a long period of time, so I think beating homesickness and adapting to a new culture could be a challenge. I am open minded and adaptable, and want to enjoy this summer in Thailand as much as I can!
Sawadee krap!
My name is Emmanuel, and my journey began in the Caribbean, where I was born and raised on St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. My path since then has been anything but linear; I moved to Ohio for my undergraduate studies, then built a career that took me through New York City, Rhode Island, and Texas. Driven by a desire for global service, I returned to the Virgin Islands briefly before joining the Peace Corps in Madagascar in 2016.
Following my service, I spent several years living and working across Italy, China, and Thailand, before settling in Denver, Colorado, for six years. Most recently, after a return contract in Madagascar, I established my home base in Los Angeles. My background is a tapestry of different cultures and environments, which has shaped me into a highly adaptable and globally-minded individual.
Thailand has always held a special place in my heart. Having visited many times, I have developed a deep appreciation for the “Land of Smiles”—from the organized chaos of the cities to the serene vibes of the islands and small northern towns. The people, the rich culture, the stunning nature, and, of course, the food are world-class. When I decided to pursue my TEFL certification, Thailand was the undisputed top choice. It’s a country where I feel both inspired and at home, making it the perfect environment to transition into teaching.
Every international move comes with its hurdles—logistical shifts, time zone adjustments, and the inevitable language barrier. However, having navigated life in diverse corners of the globe, I view these not as obstacles, but as essential parts of the journey.
Because I have “hit the ground running” in so many different countries, these challenges no longer faze me. I overcome them through a mix of patience, proactive learning, and a sense of humor. I’ve learned that as long as you approach a new culture with humility and an open mind, the “challenges” usually turn into your best stories.
Through the XploreAsia TEFL course, I am looking for more than just a certificate. I hope to:
1) Build a Global Network: Connect with fellow travelers, educators, and mentors who share a passion for international education.
2) Master the Craft: Gain the specific pedagogical tools needed to be an effective educator for non-native speakers.
3) Deepen My Cultural Roots: Move beyond the perspective of a frequent visitor and truly integrate into the local community as a professional.
4) Explore the area: The beaches, caves, temples, markets, national parks, restaurants, and other fun activities like water sports while living in Hua Hin for a month
I’m excited to see how this chapter adds to my story and helps me grow both personally and professionally.
