Hello everyone! My name is Ana and I am from North Carolina in the United States. I am close to finishing up my first year of teaching pre-kindergarten, but I have worked with children for many years. I would love to travel more and gain teaching experience in other parts of the world, so I believe this is an excellent opportunity for me. This will be my first time traveling outside of the United States, so I expect that I will experience some culture shock as well as feel a bit homesick at first. I expect to overcome this challenge by immersing myself among a different culture and finding my community within the people I meet on this journey. From this experience, I hope to gain valuable insight into a beautiful culture and make lifelong memories and friends.
Hi Katie, what an exciting time for you! Traveling to a new country where the first language isn’t English can definitely be a cultural shock, but I think it’s gratifying once you start learning and picking up the language. What countries have you traveled to, and which one has been your favorite? I also have the travel bug š Looking forward to meeting you and all the other teachers!
Hey everyone! My name is Mattie. I got my Bachelor’s in Business Administration and just recently got back from a 2 year volunteer program. During that time I feel in love with the people, the food, and the culture. This has led to my deep desire to return again. I have done a lot of traveling, so I understand the issues with culture shock and adapting to a new environment. that being said, learning as much as you can before you go and embracing each new experience can really help you enjoy your time more. I am hoping that I can grow as an individual and refine my teaching skills so that when more opportunities come my way, I will feel ready and qualified.
Howdy! My name is Sadie Finch, and I am for the United States of America. There is not much else to say about that. I am learning how to play the harmonica and will most likely have one with me during our time in Thailand, so good luck to everyone who has to hear my playing.
I am traveling to Thailand because my sister found an opportunity to volunteer to work with English learners. It sounded like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we decided to move forward with it.
I am sure Thailand will come with many challenges, as most new things do. The biggest one I can foresee is the heat, I prefer heat, but I have never lived in an environment where it would be constant like it is supposed to be in Thailand. So it should be funny to see how I function. I will most likely overcome this by just accepting my fate.
I know this experience will bring me lots of wonderful and fun memories to look back on. I love working with children, but I have never had the opportunity to help them learn a critical intellectual skill like the English language. I also believe this experience will result in many great connections and an opportunity for me to meet some awesome people.
I look forward to working with y’all and can’t wait for this adventure.
Hi, my name is Lindsey, and I am from a small town in Massachusetts USA. Since I can remember, I have ridden and worked with horses. They have taught me many things, and it is also where I started to teach. I began teaching riding lessons which turned into me getting a job as a substitute teacher in my town’s elementary school. As I was subbing, I completed my degree in English and got the opportunity to go to South Korea during the summer for a program at Yonsei University. This all lead me to where I am today, wanting to teach English in a foreign country. So, I am currently getting ready to go to Thailand to get my TEFL certificate and make the dream a reality. As with anything new, challenges will arise especially when going to a different country, with a different culture and language. Being able to communicate with the people is a big challenge but having determination to learn Thai will make life a bit easier and show that you are trying to assimilate. Another challenge could be the food since it is very different from the regular meals in the US. It is great to try new things but finding a place that sells food you are accustomed to can help bring familiarity to the unfamiliar. I believe that this trip will help open my mind to different ways of life creating moments that will last a lifetime.
Hi, my name is Miriam. I am from a small town in Kansas, USA. I was born in Congo DRC but raised in Burundi, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. I moved to the United States about nine years ago with my family. I have 4 sisters and 2 brothers, I am the second oldest in my family. We moved a lot when I was growing up. Now that I have grown, I see the value of traveling. I love traveling and living in different countries and am happy that I am making that dream a reality. When I think about what I want in life, education (teaching) has always been the best choice for me. I got my degree in elementary education two years ago from Wichita State University. I have experience with internship student-teaching kindergarten, 2nd grade, and 5th grade when I was getting my degree. I believe that it is important that we as educators form a human connection, and relationships with our students and that āno significant learning can occur without a significant relationship.ā Teaching and learning should bring joy to both the educator and their students. I have always wanted to teach in a different country outside of the USA so this opportunity couldnāt have come at a better time in my life, traveling while also gaining teaching experience.
I believe that my biggest challenges will be finding a nice place to stay and the hot weather. I am very picky with cleanliness and it is hard for me to get used to new places so I think that it is hard for me to find a space that I can be comfortable with. I think that this experience will help me to overcome this because I will be outside my comfort space. With the heat in Thailand, the best I can do is bring a lot of sunscreen and a good umbrella.
I am hoping that I can grow as a teacher and become more confident in my skills as an educator. I also want to grow as a person and be more independent. I look forward to getting to know all of you!
Hi Brittany,
Nice to meet you. I can relate to wanting to gain more skills in the classroom because this experience will be very beneficial as an educator. I look forward to meeting all of you in person.
Hey everyone! My name is Milli, I’m 21 and from Burnley, England. I have just completed my final year studying Primary Education at York St John University, and have now achieved Qualified Teacher Status. I decided to take part in the programme because I wanted to immerse myself in a completely new and exciting culture and develop my skills as a teacher. I have never visited Thailand or SE Asia before, so while I know this will be an amazing opportunity, I am also preparing myself for a few cultural shocks and challenges along the way, which I think this course should help me prepare for. As I have been a vegetarian my whole life, I expect to face some challenges with food and eating out; however, I am preparing to overcome these by learning some useful Thai phrases and exploring my potential options before I fly out there. I am super excited to get out of my comfort zone and immerse myself in Thai culture, but still stick to my boundaries in this sense. From this experience, I hope to grow personally and professionally. I am excited to apply and adapt my teaching skills in a Thai classroom and support children to learn English in an engaging, nurturing environment. Personally, I hope to become more resilient and independent.
Hello, my name is Alisha. Iām 28 years old, born in Warwick, England, and of Punjabi Sikh/Indian heritage. Growing up, I had the privilege of living between two diverse cultures, speaking two languages, and enjoying South Asian and European cuisine throughout my life.
My journey of global exploration began early. At the age of 13 years old, my parents made the bold decision to emigrate to Australia for two years. That experience completely shifted my perspective. I was exposed to many different cultures and met people from all over the world such as: Lebanese, Macedonian, MÄori, Somaliājust to name a few. It was my first real taste of how beautifully diverse the world is, and I was instantly inspired. Thatās really when my curiosity for other cultures, languages, and communities began.
Since then, my love for travel and cultural exchange has only grown. Iāve now traveled to 22 countries, and each one has taught me something new. But it was last year that really changed everything. I decided to solo travel through Southeast Asia. And wow⦠what a journey. I loved every single minute of it. From the people to the food to the energy of the region, it all just felt so familiar. Maybe its because of my South Asian roots, but I didnāt really feel that culture shock people talk about. Instead, it felt like coming home.
That trip was transformative. I discovered a deeper connection with myself, found a profound sense of self-love, and developed a greater appreciation for life and others. I know it may sound clichƩ, but I genuinely felt like I had discovered my purpose. One of the most beautiful and unexpected blessings of that journey was meeting my life partner in Thailand, who is also creating the next chapter with me.
Fast forward a year, Iāve now been given this amazing opportunity to teach the next generation of Thailand, to help them grow, learn, and reach their goals. Giving back is a big part of my upbringing. In Sikhism, we call it āseva,ā which means selfless service. And Iāve found that this spirit of service exists in Thai Buddhist culture too, which makes this experience feel even more meaningful.
As someone who grew up in the West, I recognise the privileges Iāve been afforded, and I feel a deep responsibility to use them to uplift others. I hope to be of service not only through teaching English language but also by contributing to the community in meaningful and holistic ways.
I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity and excited to continue learning, growing, and evolving with a beautiful soul by my side.
To everyone reading this: I wish you the very best on your own journey. May it be filled with discovery, purpose, and joy!
Hi everyone,
My name is Fleur, Iām 27 years old and from the Netherlands. At 18, I received a scholarship to play volleyball and study in the United States for my bachelor’s degree. Volleyball is one of my greatest passions, and because of it, I had the opportunity to meet many international students. This experience made me realize how much I enjoy meeting new people and learning about different cultures.
After completing my master’s degree in Transatlantic Studies, I traveled to Ghana and Tanzania, where I volunteered at an orphanage and a center for teenage mothers. Although I have explored various countries in Europe, North and South America, and Africa, I have yet to visit Asia. Iām especially excited to explore Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia, where I hope to experience both the famous landmarks and immerse myself in local culture.
During my time in Africa, I enjoyed helping students improve their English, which led me to travel to Thailand and join the camp program. Even though I have travel experience, I anticipate facing challenges such as culture shock. I believe I will overcome them by taking things one day at a time, staying adaptable, going with the flow, and learning from those around me.
In high school, I struggled with learning languages and didn’t see the point. Thankfully, I had supportive teachers who helped me continue, and soon enough, I realized how essential language is in building connections. I hope this time to also form connections and explore whether teaching could become my full-time career.
Iām excited for the program and to meet some of you, and I wish everyone an amazing experience!
Hi Alisha,
I love how you wrote that you didnāt really feel a culture shock but that instead it felt like coming home when you traveled through Southeast Asia. It is also amazing to read that you felt like you had discovered your purpose, while I am still figuring that out. I wish you all the best to continue your beautiful journey and look forward to meet you if our paths cross in Thailand.
Hi Fleur,
Your time in the USA really sounds amazing and itās so great you were able to experience this opportunity and fulfill your passion for volleyball! Your time in Africa has really interested me and I think the charitable work you did was truly admirable! I completely understand your thoughts on the culture shock but It sounds like youāre a really adaptable person, with your experience of moving countries and travelling over the years, I really think youāll adjust quicker than you are expecting! Wishing you all the best on your journey in Thailand. May it be filled with love, happiness, and discovery! I hope our paths cross on this journey!
Hi! I’m Jess and I am 24 years old and from Surrey, England. I graduated from Bath Spa University 3 years ago and with a degree in Geography. I have had experience within two job roles since this time. After university I entered the non-profit world and began working from an International Organisation called Crown Agents. I enjoyed my time here and was involved in the logistics team for a number of global projects within countries such as South Sudan, working to help distribute vaccines for diseases such as Malaria. Unfortunately, this company entered insolvency and closed down so my time within this role came to an end. After this I got a job within administration for a Property Management company locally called Hamways. This wasn’t what I planned to do but I fell into it and the people were really lovely, which helped! However, I have had a strong desire to experience a new culture, travel and teach for a while now and finally had the courage to take the leap! I am nervous but also very excited and I look forward to growing as a person and meeting lots of new people throughout this journey in Thailand!
Background information about yourself
Why are you deciding to travel/move to Thailand?
What challenges do you expect to face along the way and how do you expect to overcome them?
What do you hope to get out of your experience?
Hi! My name is Faye, I am 21 and from Manchester, England.
I have always loved learning about cultures that are very different from my own, and Thailand has always interested me as everyone I have met, who is either from Thailand or has visited previously, has said the people are so friendly and the culture is beautiful. When I heard about the teaching abroad programme I knew this was something I would love to be a part of, especially as I have just finished my English Language and Linguistics degree.
I expect the difference in culture and language barrier to be a challenge, as I have never visited Thailand before. I plan to overcome this by learning as much as I can and embracing the cultural and linguistic differences.
From this experience, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of cultural beliefs and practices that differ from my own, as well as hopefully offering something of value back to the people I meet through my knowledge of English.
Hi everyone!!! My name is Calia Hunter and I am an intuitive healer from California! I have an immense passion for holistic wellness and teaching others how to strengthen their innate capacities for healing their mind, body, and spirit. I am currently pursuing my Masters in Humanistic Psychology with a specialization in Consciousness, Spirituality, and Integrative Health and aspire to become a health educator following my education. I am deciding to travel to Thailand as it is a country that has always called to me and resonates with my way of life as a compassionate and empathetic being. In turn, I greatly look forward to immersing myself in a predominantly Buddhist culture as Buddhist values are deeply in alignment with my view of and interaction with myself, the world, and other living beings. In terms of anticipated challenges, I expect to have some adversities related to being a dark-skinned African American woman. When considering the demographics in Thailand, I am aware that there are not a substantial amount of people like me there working in the community and understand that it will be an adjustment for all parties! Nevertheless, I recognize that moving with kindness and grace in all situations is necessary for overcoming challenges and am excited to integrate with the locals. In relation to what I anticipate gaining from this experience, I am interested in gaining a shift in worldly perspective. In coming from a highly privileged and entitled society, I am interested in gaining more cultural humility through real life practice and going beyond my existing community to connect with others of differing cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
