Hello Helena, that’s so amazing you were able to do 4 years in the navy! Thank you for your service. You are also an esthetician, I’ve been an esthetician for about 7 years now and I can’t wait to share crazy stories 😄. Also, I’m super excited you are able to reach a goal and be able to teach. ✨
My name is Robert. I’ve always loved exploring new places, and I’m choosing to travel to Thailand because I’m drawn to its rich culture, warm people, and completely new way of life. I know I’ll face challenges such as adapting to a different culture and language, but I’m ready to approach them with patience, openness, and a willingness to learn. From this experience, I hope to grow personally, gain confidence, and build new connections that broaden my understanding of the world.
Hi – my name is Winky. I am from Toronto, Canada.
I have decided to travel to Thailand for the thrill of learning a new culture, and to take a break from the mundane corporate life back home.
I expect to face a language barrier and having to adapt to a different way of life. I expect to overcome these challenges by learning some Thai words and to adapt to to local environment by observation of behaviour.
I hope to make great connections and have great teaching skills by the end of my time in Thailand.
Hi Everyone,
My name is Henrietta Cartwright. I am from London, England. I have a BA honours degree in Fine Art but I spent the last ten years setting up a public art non profit in the US which created artists residencies in our local school district.
My circumstances have changed a great deal recently, my children have left home to go to university and I find myself with the ability to widen my horizons and expand my possibilities.
I have always had a passion for Thailand and it’s rich, historical culture. Here is the perfect chance to bring together so many of the things that are important to me: eduction, teaching, personal and professional growth, making a positive impact. Creating an engaging learning experience for Thai people while learning so much from then about their country and culture would make all my dreams come true.
Of course no growth like this comes without challenges. It will be a huge adjustment to be part of a new culture. Not having friends and family around will also be new and strange. These disadvantages will be offset by the Xplore program itself. The support, immersion, training, and cultural exposure that is built in will be invaluable. But a lot of the grit and determination to succeed must come from within myself. Being open to learning new languages, getting to know new people and ways of life are all critically important.
Thank you for this opportunity I’m really looking forward to what the next few months will bring.
Hello, I am Tyler Queen, a 24 year old from North Carolina in the United States.
I am moving to Thailand due to a variety of converging reasons. One, I was looking for a career change. For the last two years, I’ve worked in local government as a city planner, wearing many hats. This line of work gave me a passion for service, but jaded me in the ways of a slow-paced and monotonous bureaucratic way of doing things. I’m looking to hit refresh and see about new career paths. I also felt socially isolated by some events of the last couple years, and wanted to enter a new environment. I’ve always lived near my hometown, and considered moving somewhere else in the states, but decided to make an even bigger jump because, why not?
I expect my chief challenges to be culture shock, learning how to teach on the fly, and homesickness. I have never lived in a new culture, never taught children, nor have I been away from my home and family for this long before. I do think my personality is suited for it, as I make connections easily and am not an anxious or worrisome person. My best plan so far is to stay busy to avoid having long periods of isolation and boredom, which I think will be easy to accomplish in a new environment.
I hope to walk away from the experience with a better sense of purpose in life, and the confidence that I can take on a crazy adventure anywhere in the world.
Hello everyone my name is Kenneth Nathan and I am 58 years old and live in Australia. It appears that I may be the oldest person in this group:)
I was born in India but immigrated to Australia at a young age in the early 70’s. So Australia is where I grew up. I also have lived in the USA for a few years in the 90’s.
I have travelled extensively and love people, love experiencing new cultures, and love learning.
I am a counsellor by qualification but I do not work with clients anymore. I run a small business running training for professionals who work with kids at risk. I have written programs for adolescents in anger management, ADHD, Anxiety and depression and adolescent violence against women. I teach professionals how to facilitate these programs in schools and organisations and I have been travelling across Australia in the last 15 years doing this. I love what I do but as I am moving towards retirement in another 10 years I am looking for some possibilities to work and live overseas. I normally travel as a consumer but this is the first time I will be travelling and doing a course. Who knows where it will take me but I am open to possibilities. I don’t plan on staying and teaching in Thailand after I finish the course but will return to Australia and continue with my business. teaching English is something I plan to do later on in my life.
I have been to Thailand several times and love the people, food and culture. I’m looking forward to learning and making some new connections. Life is great mate!
Hello all.
My name is Alice; I’m 54 and from Australia looking to work in Cambodia initially as a teacher of English as a second language and then in as many countries as possible thereafter! I’ve spent a long life working in the military, and as a veteran, hope to provide the support and knowledge I have learned to others that will benefit from it. I believe that providing English to improving students in financially poor countries will support better living opportunities, which can be an important achievement and steppingstone for their future.
With the financially strained situation in parts of Cambodia, I believe that seeing struggling families in dire circumstances will be heartrending and not being in a position to assist them would be my biggest hurdle. Unfortunately, I have also heard that Cambodia is also a place where there is a higher criminal activity, and while I appreciate the circumstance that leads to this possibility, I hope that I can take all possible caution while there to prevent harm from happening to those that are there to support me, the people I know and myself.
I am determined to focus on the happiness of the students that I will be working with for their personal improvement and will work to create a positive outlook for the school’s wellbeing and safety. Living and seeing different cultural traditions will all be an added bonus and give me the impetus to strive to do more, plus appreciate the chance that I have taken to make it happen.
Hello! My name is Sophie.
I am from Leicester in the UK.
I studied at university and gained both a bachelors and master’s degree in criminology but never went on to pursue a career within the field. Instead, I moved to London and started a career in the health sector as a care-coordinator in a private IVF clinic. Having worked in this role for 8 years, it became repetitive, emotionally and physically draining, economic factors such as the cost of living made living in London less enjoyable and more of a fight for survival. I started to feel burnt out and tired of this way of life. This is when I decided to take the step which would change my whole life.
I decided to move to Thailand because of its rich cultural heritage, vibrant cities, and beautiful natural scenery. I wanted to learn new things and was excited to immerse myself in Thai culture, meet new people, and gain a deeper understanding of the country’s traditions and lifestyle.
I anticipate facing several challenges during this journey, such as adjusting to a new language, navigating unfamiliar social norms, and adapting to a life without my family close by. I plan to overcome these challenges by learning basic Thai phrases, staying open-minded and respectful, and remembering my family are just a phone call away. I also plan to keep reminding myself that what I have chosen to do is brave and courageous, and in ten years time I will look back and be proud of overcoming any fears and soldiering through it and growing as a person.
I hope to become a more resilient and stronger minded version of myself, (if I can move halfway across the world, I can do anything!) I hope to become more positive and more educated and knowledgeable about different cultures and ways of life. I want to gain new friendships and experiences and create the best memories and achievements so I can one day look back and be able to say that I lived and enjoyed to my fullest potential and I did it my way!
I am so excited to see where this journey will take me and hope to be an amazing English teacher 😊
Sophie
Background information about yourself
Why are you deciding to travel/move to Thailand?
What challenges do you expect to face along the way and how do you expect to overcome them?
What do you hope to get out of your experience?
Hello Im Gerald from USA. I’m a retired special education teacher/football coach. I’ve taught special education for 20 years on all levels from elementary to high school, most of my teaching years at the high school level. I’ve mentored new teachers to the profession, as well as been department head for the subject matter at various schools. I’ve been in class support, co-teacher, behavior teacher, and also worked with severe disabled students.
I decided to retire in Thailand initially. I chose the country for its friendly people, great climate, large ex pat community and inexpensive cost of living.
Challenges. Im sure will be language barriers. With time Im sure the barriers will slowly become ideal for overcoming with the help of others and learning the language on my own.
I hope to get a rich experience that will help me adjust, learn, and live in Thailand for many many years.
Hi everyone! I’m Gordon, but I go by my middle name, Berkeley. I’m 30 years old and currently living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. My career has always involved finding ways to make a positive impact and solve problems. I started out working for a nonprofit consulting firm, then moved into a Development role in the arts. Along the way, I began volunteering as a tutor and mentor and quickly realized how much I love teaching. Since then, I’ve been working with elementary students and truly enjoying it.
I decided to move to Thailand and teach in an unfamiliar environment because I love exploring new cultures. The opportunity to teach English, build meaningful relationships with students, and contribute to a local community really excites me.
Of course, there are challenges I expect to face along the way. Adjusting to a new language, a new teaching environment, different customs, and an entirely new daily routine will definitely push me outside my comfort zone. Even something as simple as learning basic Thai will be a challenge. I know there will be moments when I feel overwhelmed or unsure, but my plan is to approach each obstacle with patience, curiosity, and a willingness to ask for help.
Ultimately, I want to develop a deeper sense of resiliency and confidence by succeeding in a new and challenging environment. I’m also looking forward to the connections, friendships, and experiences that I don’t think I could find anywhere else.
Hi Amanda! It’s great to meet you. Taking time for your own mental well-being is so important, and it’s inspiring that you’re using this year to explore something new. Your background in behavioral health will be such an asset in the classroom. It’s awesome that you’ve already started learning Thai and immersing yourself in the culture, that’s going to make a huge difference. Wishing you amazing adventures and friendships ahead!
I’m a recent M.Ed. graduate and credentialed K–6 teacher from California who has spent the last few years deeply immersed in early elementary education. Through my classroom placements and research on student engagement and small group instruction, I’ve found that I’m most energized when I’m learning from new environments, cultures, and communities. I’m deciding to move to Thailand because I want to grow both personally and professionally in a place known for its strong sense of community, vibrant culture, and access to nature. I know I will face challenges such as adjusting to a new language, new routines, and being farther from home, but I plan to lean on the adaptability and openness I have built through teaching as well as the connections I will form once I arrive. Ultimately, I hope to gain greater confidence, independence, and a broader global perspective that will shape me as both a person and an educator.
Hi! My name is Bridget. I am 22 years old, and I am from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina in the United States. I recently graduated from Clemson University and decided to participate in this program because I have a love for travel. I’ve done missionary work in South America and studied in Italy for a semester, which has led me to this next opportunity. I am super excited for this adventure in Thailand. I think the language barrier and the cultural differences compared to my own will take some getting used to, but I believe the best way to overcome these challenges is to keep an open mind and try my best to live and work as people do in Thailand. Studying the language will help as well. I hope to gain new friends, try new foods, have unforgettable experiences, and gain real-life teaching experience!
My name is Grayson Young, I am 25 years old, and I come from sunny South Africa, where I have developed a strong appreciation for cultural diversity and community. I am eager to join a teach abroad course in Thailand because it offers a unique opportunity to combine my passion for education with cultural immersion and personal growth. Teaching in Thailand would allow me to make a meaningful impact by supporting students’ learning while gaining hands-on classroom experience in an international setting. I am particularly drawn to Thailand’s rich culture, strong sense of community, and respect for education, which I believe would help me develop as both an educator and an individual. Through this course, I hope to build cross-cultural communication skills, adapt my teaching methods to diverse learners, and gain a deeper global perspective that will strengthen my future career in education.
Hi everyone, my name is Jess, I’m 22 and I am from Australia. My family and I used to live in a bus when I was younger and I’ve travelled around the whole country. I love camping and anything to do with the ocean. In my spare time I like to dance and spend time with my family, we are all very close. I wanted to travel to Thailand to experience something new and to open myself up to the world around me, I want to see how other people live and how it differs from my own situation. In Thailand I expect to face a language barrier (something that will be new to me), I have tried to prepare for this by learning a little of the language. I also expect that the confrontation to poverty will be difficult to see initially, I come from a very safe country that does not face, on the same scale, the economic and social adversities that Thailand has. I want to learn and educate myself as much as I can and hopefully apply it to make the world a better place.
