My name is Alyssia, and I’m a 35-year-old woman from the United States, currently living in New York. I’ve always had a passion for education and cultural exchange, and after visiting Thailand in 2023, I fell in love with the country—its warmth, beauty, and the kindness of its people. That experience inspired me to take the next step in my journey: earning a TESOL certification so I can teach English abroad and contribute meaningfully to local communities.
I’ve decided to move to Thailand because I want to immerse myself in a culture that values learning, connection, and respect. Working with children brings me so much joy, and I believe that helping them develop English language skills will open doors for their futures while also giving me the opportunity to grow personally and professionally.
I expect that adjusting to a new culture and navigating language barriers will be some of the main challenges I’ll face. However, I plan to overcome these by staying open-minded, patient, and proactive in learning Thai and engaging with local people. I know that cultural adaptation takes time, but I’m eager to embrace the experience with curiosity and respect.
Through this journey, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of Thai culture and education, build lasting relationships, and grow as both a teacher and a person. Ultimately, I want this experience to be a step toward a more global, compassionate, and fulfilling career.
My name is Desreal Shorts, and I’m from Detroit, Michigan. I recently earned my BFA in Studio Arts and Crafts from the College for Creative Studies, and I also hold a BA degree in Sociology from the University of Florida. Before returning to school, I served in the U.S. military as a Builder (BU), an experience that taught me discipline, adaptability, and the importance of community.
I’ve decided to move to Thailand because it’s one of the few places where I’ve truly felt at peace. During my time there in the military, I fell in love with the people, the culture, and the food. I remember feeling grounded and healthy in a way I hadn’t experienced anywhere else. Thailand feels like a place where I can build a new sense of home—one that aligns with who I’ve grown into and where I’m headed.
One challenge I anticipate is the language barrier, but I plan to take Thai lessons and immerse myself in daily conversation. For me, learning the local language isn’t just practical—it’s a sign of respect and a doorway to genuine connection.
Ultimately, I hope this experience helps me grow both personally and creatively. I want to be part of a community that feels authentic and reciprocal—where I can contribute my skills and spirit while learning from the people around me. My goal is to build a life that feels intentional, connected, and deeply fulfilling.
My name is Maddie and I am 20years old from Brisbane, Australia. I have one year left of my Bachelor of Health, Sport and Physical Education, where I will become a specialised science and HPE teacher. I love learning about new cultures and how to engage students in fun ways, with some of my favourite placements being rural, where I have learnt so much! I have travelled a bit since I graduated high school, including with family, friends and on a Contiki tour.
I have decided to travel and teach in Thailand because I think it would be an amazing experience and a chance to make a real difference. It will help me grow both professionally and as a person. Probably the main challenge I anticipate to face would be homesickness. I plan on overcoming this by just focusing on the amazing experience we will be having. I will most likely keep busy and hopefully make some social connections 😊. Feeling nervous but excited for this experience!
Hi,
My name is Phill and I’m a Geography teacher from Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. I’m 41 and have been teaching around 6 years and had many jobs before then including sales, hospitality, sports massage and youth work.
I am travelling to Thailand as it has been in the back of my mind for around a decade and feel this is good time to take a break from working in the UK and experience a different culture and one I have experienced before as a backpacker in 2008.
I expect that initially it’ll be a big adjustment in terms of language and culture but aim to be open minded, calm and enjoy what is on offer as I know Thailand has a lot to offer in terms of making connections, experiencing beautiful scenery and food and great weather!. I may struggle initially with the heat but hope to find ways to manage whether it be appropriate clothing or air con! I aim to be patient and take the positives out of each day and remember the reasons I am there.
I hope to show myself that I am still able to live independently without luxuries of being at home, learn a new culture and language, meet some fantastic people and of course be a great teacher of English 🙂
Hi,
My name is Csenge. I am 26 years old from Hungary. I have a bachelor’s degree in Tourism and Hospitality management since summer of 2024 and since then I have been working as an event planner and project manager at an event venue. I really enjoyed my job but traveling and seeing the world has always been my true passion. I have spent two separate years living in the U.S. and 8 months in Spain and travelled to 30+ countries in Europe. In the U.S. I worked as an Au Pair for a year and throughout my life I have done a lot of babysitting, volunteering in kindergartens and for several years I was a scout leader for young children. Because of these experiences I have always felt a strong connection to working with kids, which is why I decided to complete a TEFL course so that I can teach English to children abroad.
I have been planning for a long time to go to Thailand to teach as I’ve heard great things about the country, and now I am finally making this dream come true!
I’ve travelled across Europe and North-America but this will be my first time in Asia so I am sure there will be some culture shock, and it will take time to adjust, but I am an open-minded and adaptable person so I am sure I will overcome the initial challenges.
I am very excited to experience a new culture, meet new people, explore Thailand’s natural and cultural beauty and share the beauty of English language with my students to the best of my ability.
Hi there! My name is Helena. I am from the United States and for awhile now have lived by the beach, my favorite place to be. Straight out of High School, I joined the Navy and traveled all over the world. I ended up getting out after serving for 4 years in hopes of becoming an elementary teacher. Although life had different plans for me then, I feel like this is a full moment circle for me to now have the opportunity to full fill a dream of mine in this lifetime to teach. I am currently an Esthetician but look forward to working with kids again.
I decided to travel to Thailand to complete this program because I feel like when I traveled there a few years back, I left my heart there in hopes of returning so it’s the perfect place and time to do it. I love the people, the temples, the weather, the food, the culture, the beaches but mostly the respect and kindness. There isn’t much to not love about this country in my personal opinion! The only challenge I am nervous about since I have been there before is this time, communicating better. I want to learn more of the language, such as common phrases to overcome this and get the best experience. Thankfully, a smile and being respectful can go a long way there.
I am hoping to gain more growth and knowledge on this trip. I would like to not only immerse myself in the Thai culture but also with the people attending the program as well since they will be from all around the world with different backgrounds. I think it is important to learn about different ways of living and experience them if able. I aim to learn, give back and make beautiful memories with wonderful new people!
Hello everyone, I’m Keva, a 41-year-old American from Macon, Georgia, United States. My lifelong passion for travel was initially inspired by my grandfather, a US Air Force veteran, which led me to serve in the US Army from 2004 to 2014. This decade of service included five duty stations, notably South Korea and Iraq, and complemented my BA in Mass Communication from Mount St. Mary’s University. While I’ve built a career in customer service, hospitality, and media, my time since arriving in Thailand (Pattaya/Jomtien Beach) in January 2025 has been dedicated to pursuing multiple professional ventures. Beyond settling in culturally, I’ve been actively developing my own travel business, which is currently undergoing an exciting rebranding process. This past summer, I also had the privilege of co-hosting a women’s wellness retreat, which was an incredible success. I am now genuinely looking forward to embarking on my teaching adventure in Hua Hin, Thailand. This new chapter aligns perfectly with my long-term goals, as I aim to eventually integrate online English tutoring and language coaching into my current business model. I approach this learning curve with patience, empathy, and an open mind. In my downtime, I maintain balance by sipping matcha, taking morning beach walks, and exploring local spots. I enjoy creating content, trying new vegan foods, meditating, and further refining business ideas. I value both solitude and social interaction, and I’m always eager to connect with culturally curious, like-minded people. I look forward to the journey ahead!
Hi Everyone,
My name is Stephen and I’m from Ireland. I have a Bachelors Degree in Computing. I’ve had jobs mostly in retail and administration with time spent volunteering as a sports coach.
I think the first difference I will notice when I arrive in Thailand will be the weather which is something I am looking forward to as I will be getting away from the cold, wind and rain of the Irish winter. Jumping straight into emerging myself in the language being patient and open minded will be a good starting point, while learning the basics beforehand to be prepared.
I hope to learn not only more about myself on this trip but everyone I encounter from Thailand, Asia and other parts of the world. So I feel like now is a good time to go out and explore new cultures, try new food and learn some more skills both in work and in life.
Hello All,
My name is Georgia, I’m 22 years old and live in England. I graduated from university this year and always had the intention of travelling Asia once I had completed my degree. This was due to previous trip to Vietnam and Laos when I was 16. Before university I was a secondary school Teaching Assistant/ Teacher in physical education. With a love for sport I continued to study at university and with a love for teaching I will arrive in Thailand to embark on this incredible journey.
I believe the biggest challenge I will face will be the language barrier but hope that by being kind and respectful I will get to where I need to be and slowly learn the language along the way. I am also going to put myself into a variety of settings so that I’m not just learning the language needed to get around school life but also day to day. An example of this would be a Muay Thai gym.
I hope to have a positive impact on the students I am teaching and embed myself into the school/local community.
Hi, my name is Chloe, I’m 35 and from London, UK. I have previously worked as a midwife and more recently in the charity sector working with women and children experiencing multiple disadvantages and complex trauma such as domestic violence and homelessness.
My brother has been working as an English teacher in Bangkok for the last 8 years and now has a wife and 2-week-old baby! Because of this I have been lucky enough to visit Thailand a few times and see the sort of lifestyle I would be able to have as an English teacher here. I enjoy supporting others and working with children so I’m hoping this will be a great fit. I would still like to travel a lot more and am hoping that this course will enable me to teach all over the world.
My biggest challenge will probably be public speaking! I hoping throughout the course, little by little I can push myself to increase my confidence in this.
Although my main goal is to gain a TEFL certification, I really enjoy meeting new people and would love to make some friends on the course to make the trip really memorable!
Hi Cheyenne,
I’d love to find out more about your work as an aesthetician and get some beauty tips! Looking forward to meeting you! 🙂

Hi! My name is Rob I am 55 years old and I am from the USA. In my 20’s as a college student I attended Semester at Sea. That experience was so profound that I knew one day would return to South East Asia. I learned of the opportunity to teach English in Thailand and the rest is as they say History as I am here in Hua Hin as I write this profile. I am a little nervous about the language barrier but figure my good nature and positive attitude will overcome this barrier I hope to learn Thai as a way to really immerse myself into the culture and not just be seen as a tourist. I look forward to teaching here in Thailand and becoming a positive influence in many students lives. I look forward to meeting the folks in this program and learning from them as well as the instructors.
Hello, my name is Nathaniel and I’m originally from New York. I’ve moved around a lot in the U.S. over the past few years, and recently decided it was time to leave the country and experience something completely new. I love exploring new places and learning about different cultures. When I discovered the XploreAsia program, it felt like the perfect fit.
I have experience working with children through an after-school program called HOST, which helped students catch up in school. I also have a younger brother with autism, and watching him grow has inspired me to continue helping kids. Outside of that, I enjoy painting and martial arts.
I chose Thailand because I’ve trained Muay Thai for a few years and have always been interested in Thai culture. I thought teaching would be a great opportunity to learn more about the culture while also sharing my own. I know I will face challenges such as language barriers, culture shock, and probably getting lost but I plan to overcome them by studying Thai, adapting quickly, and having patience.
I hope to gain a new perspective on life from this experience. Traveling has shown me that you can always learn from others, and the world has so much to offer. Best of luck to my fellow teachers, I look forward to meeting everyone.
Hello, my name is Ashley, and I previously worked as a Merchandise Manager at Ulta Beauty. I was born in New York and raised in Florida, and along the way I’ve been fortunate to travel to different places across the United States. Throughout my life, I’ve naturally gravitated toward caring for children, friends, and family, while also embracing the joy of learning something new every day. Growing up with a younger brother who has OCD and who spoke later than most taught me the value of consistency, patience, and practice—reminders that with dedication, we can all continue to grow and learn. I’ve decided to move to Thailand to immerse myself in its culture, spirituality, and the freedom of experiencing life in a new way. I’ve always been drawn to Thai traditions, especially the beauty of its temples and the sense of peace that Buddhism inspires. One challenge I anticipate is adjusting to the food, as I can be a bit of a picky eater. However, my love for cooking makes me excited to explore local markets and experiment with new flavors, turning this challenge into an opportunity. Ultimately, I hope this journey helps me grow both personally and spiritually. I want to continue learning each day, becoming more open to life’s possibilities, and embracing experiences with curiosity rather than seriousness. I look forward to meeting everyone and beginning this program with enthusiasm and gratitude.
Hello Desreal, I saw you got your BFA in Studio Arts and Crafts, I’m an artist myself and it would be nice to connect and hear about what you’ve learned over the years. I can also relate to your challenge with language barrier, I and look forward to meeting you, hearing about your travels and hopefully seeing some of your artwork.
